We Are HeartStarter
HeartStarter is a project created by students at Enactus Memorial. Partnering with Drone NL; these students are taking flight to help their communities.
In Canada, 35,000 to 45,000 people die of sudden cardiac arrest each year. Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating normally and cannot pump blood through the body effectively. A vast majority of cardiac arrests happen outside of hospitals, and only 1 in 10 people survive cardiac arrests that happen at home or in public places. CPR and defibrillation using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is the most effective treatment for cardiac arrests, but finding AEDs in emergency situations remains a major challenge in Canada, especially in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador because it is the only province in Canada without an AED registry.
For every one-minute delay in defibrillation, the survival rate of cardiac arrest victims decreases by 7 to 10 percent. While Emergency Medical Services (EMS) response times vary across the province, the average chute time (the time from when an ambulance is dispatched to when it begins continuous travel to the location of the medical emergency) in Newfoundland and Labrador is 6.3 minutes, which means before ambulances arrives on location an average of time 6.3 minutes has already elapsed and survival rates of cardiac arrest victims have decreased by 44 to 63 percent.
WHAT WE DO.
Recognizing the critical need for better and faster access to AEDs in
Newfoundland and Labrador, Enactus Memorial partnered with DroneNL to design an AED delivery system via drone. We are planning to use innovative unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology to transport AEDs via drones to cardiac arrest victims within a 15km radius in under 3 minutes, reducing transportation times significantly, and potentially, increasing the chance of survival for cardiac arrest victims in Newfoundland and Labrador. Simultaneously, we will be introducing an education element to the project, to ensure all citizens are aware of the concerns surrounding heart health, as well are informed of this new projects across the province.
Enactus Memorial has partnered with Drone NL, The Heart & Stroke Foundation, and PulsePoint to make this possible.
